DAYTON, Ohio - Nikki Oakland tallied her second straight double-double with a career-high 32 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Dayton women's basketball team to a decisive 85-64 victory over Akron on UD Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers (6-2) have now won six straight including two in a row at home. Oakland, a senior forward from San Diego, CA, scored the first 14 Flyer points on the day and poured in 20 points before halftime en route to her first-ever 30-point scoring effort. Overall, she was 13-for-19 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line while pulling down four of her 10 rebounds from the offensive glass in 25 minutes played. Classmate Kathy Guin came off the bench with a career high of her own at 18 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting from the field. She was also 3-for-3 from three-point range in the first half alone. Guin added three assists and four rebounds to help the Flyers connect on 47.8 percent (32-of-67) of their shots on the day. Seniors Brittany Holterman and Kiki Lund tallied nine points each in the rout of the Zips. Holterman also had three assists and two steals while Lund drilled 2-of-3 shots from beyond the arc. Ashley Armstrong dished out a career-best six assists while sophomore Kendel Ross finished with four of her own for the Flyers, which had 23 assists on 32 made shots overall. Four players reached double figures in scoring for the Zips (3-5) led by a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. She was followed by Sarah Tokodi with 14 points, Kara Murphy with 13 and Ashley Veal with 11 for an Akron squad that was held to 38.1 percent (24-of-63) shooting from the field. Dayton led by as many as 20 points in the first half as Akron had trouble shutting down Nikki Oakland. The Flyer senior scored all of Dayton's first 14 points over the course of seven minutes, until Kiki Lund connected on a shot from beyond the arc at 12:49. The Zips answered back on a jumper from Todoki, but Dayton extended its lead as Kathy Guin and Kiki Lund scored back-to-back threes. Holterman tallied two baskets and so did Oakland as UD went on a 16-0 run for a score of 36-17 with 5:43 on the clock. Akron would remain scoreless for nearly five minutes until Riana Miller connected on two free throw shots at 4:45 (36-19). Guin was hot from beyond the arc scoring another three at 4:30. She went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the first frame as Dayton dominated in shooting 56 percent from the field. Oakland would tally two more points on a jumper with less than a minute on the clock as she posted 20 points in the first frame on 8-of-10 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Her 20-point effort was the most for a single half for Oakland in her career. Dayton took the lead heading into the locker room, 44-31. The Flyers opened up the scoring on a layup from Ashley Armstrong. However, Akron's Kara Murphy and Lauren Stephenson contributed three and two points, respectively to pull within 10 points (46-36) at 15:06. Oakland kept up the momentum from the first half with three jumpers in just over a minute. Holterman added two points and hot-shooting Oakland scored yet again for a Dayton 10-0 run and a 20-point lead, 56-36 at 14:40. Dayton never looked back leading by as many as 23 points in the half, ultimately winning the game 85-64. The Flyers will remain home to host Indiana on Wednesday, Dec. 5 as a part of a women's and men's basketball doubleheader. The women's game is scheduled for 5:15 p.m., followed by the men's game at 8:00 p.m. ET. Both games can be followed with Gametracker and FREE live video at www.DaytonFlyers.com. |
