DAYTON, Ohio - Senior Nikki Oakland scored a double-double in the Flyers 69-53 victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats in the team's home opener Thursday night at UD Arena. The Flyers posted their fifth-straight win of the season and the team's first win over UC in seven years. Oakland scored a game-high 15 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Kendel Ross had a season-high 12 points to go with three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Brittany Holterman added four blocks and two steals to her 11 point performance. Freshman Kristin Daugherty grabbed seven rebound, six points, and blocked two shots in 25 minutes of action, while Kelly Keil pulled down six rebounds and had three blocks of her own. UC's Tenishia Benson had a double-double with 13 points and ten boards, while teammate Kahla Roudebush also posted 13 points of her own. The Flyers out-rebounded the Bearcats 43-38 and added nine blocks to their strong defensive stand. Offensively, UD received 26 points from the bench to UC's seven. It was all Dayton in the game's opening minutes as the Flyers' defense held the Bearcats scoreless for the first seven minutes of play before UC's Carla Jacobs hit a jumper with 13:07 on the clock. Cincinnati came alive on a 10-2 run, capped off by Jacobs hitting a three pointer at 10:09 to tie the game at 10 apiece, for the first tie of the game. The Flyers responded with a three point play of their own, but Jacobs tied the game again with a shot from beyond the arc on their next time down the court. Dayton didn't look back from that point and continued to build a lead. Kristen Daugherty hit a jump shot with three seconds left in the first frame to give UD a 31-18 advantage, the biggest lead of the half. The Flyers kept up the momentum as the team's biggest lead of the game came after a Kendel Ross three pointer at 11:17. The Flyers led 51-27, putting the game out of reach by 24 points. Dayton never looked back winning 69-53. The Flyers will remain home to host Akron on Sunday, Dec. 2 at UD Arena.
