WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WINS AGAIN ON ROAD, 73-62, AT CLEVELAND STATE
Nov. 23, 2004
CLEVELAND - Senior guard Emily Williams set a career-high for the second time this season, scoring 26 points as the University of Dayton women's basketball team came from behind for a 73-62 win over Cleveland State University Tuesday evening at the CSU Convocation Center. Angela Cape added 10 points, eight in the second half, as the Flyers improve to 2-1 on the season. CSU falls to 0-3. Dayton forced 17 turnovers in the second half and scored 20 points off those turnovers to erase a one-time 13-point deficit. Cleveland State got to the free throw line early, driving to the hoop and drawing fouls. Six of CSU's first 13 points came from the foul line. A three-pointer by Williams tied it at 11-11, but Cleveland State went on an 8-0 run over the next 1:45 to establish a 19-11 lead. The Vikings extended the lead to 26-13 on a three by Maria Rickards. Williams led the Flyers back with eight-straight points to cut the CSU lead to six at 35-29 with 1:38 left before the half. After a basket by CSU, Brittany Holterman put back a missed free throw with a reverse lay-up to complete a 24-11 run to close the half and put UD within six at 37-31. Holterman scored six of her points in the first half, as did Jennifer Strong. Williams led all scorers with 15 at the break. In the second half, Williams picked up where she left off, scoring UD's first six points of the half. Wright scored off a pick-and-roll to pull UD within two at 41-39, and a jumper from the top of the paint by Angela Cape tied the game at 41-41. But three-straight baskets from the Vikings put CSU back up 47-41. From there Dayton went on a 16-5 run, started by four points from Terri Ramsey and another inside score from Cape. Katie Butler then knocked down back-to-back threes to put UD on top 57-52 with 7:48 remaining. Dayton held CSU to just eight points in the final 7:06 of the game, finishing on a 28-12 run in the final 11:35. Down the stretch, Dayton hit their free throws and got a big three from Ramsey to close the game out 73-62. Williams is now averaging 22.0 points per game on the season after breaking her career-high twice in UD's first three-games. Cara Wright saw her double-double streak end at two, finishing with six points and six rebounds. Dayton has won both of its road games this season, including a season-opening win at Akron. The Flyers will travel to Toledo for a non-conference game Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. against the University of Toledo Rockets. |
