FLYERS PULL OUT WIN IN OVERTIME AT NAVY, 64-58

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Behind a double-double from junior Kendel Ross and career-high scoring from freshmen Kayla Moses and Casey Nance, the University of Dayton women's basketball team pulled out a 64-58 overtime win at Navy Tuesday evening. UD earned their third-straight win and improved to 3-2 on the season, while Navy fell 2-4 on the year. Ross earned her second double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. She also tallied three assists, two steals, and a block in the contest. Freshmen Kayla Moses and Casey Nance both earned career-highs chipping in with 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Nance also had a career best in rebounds finishing with nine. Fellow teammates, Patrice Lalor and Justine Raterman also contributed to the Flyer offense with eight points apiece. Poor shooting hindered the Flyers much of the game. Dayton finished 1-of-7 from three-point range (14 percent), but still out-shot the Mids, 41 percent to 34 percent in the game. The Dayton D forced 18 turnovers and only had nine. UD also won the won the battle of the boards 64-58 and held a commanding lead in points in the paint (36-12). It was a back-and-forth battle to start as the first frame featured three ties and seven lead changes. Dayton had trouble getting a shot off from three-point range going 0-1 in the half, while Navy finished 6-of-12 (50 percent) from downtown. Patrice Lalor opened up the half with a lay-up right out of the gate, but Navy built an early lead (8-2) after back-to-back three's and a bucket from Whitney Davidson. Dayton took the lead back on a shot under the basket from Kendel Ross after a 6-0 run. The score moved to 9-8 with 12:32 left to play. From that point on the lead continued to change, until the Midshipmen began to pull away on an 8-0 spurt that included two consecutive trey's from Erin Edwards and Davidson. UD's Marie Rosche would get one up with a minute on the clock, but Navy would answer back with another shot from downtown for its biggest lead of the half by seven points, 26-19 with 30 seconds remaining. Rosche would score again on the Flyers next possession; however the Mids kept their edge into the half, 26-21. The score would stay within five points in the second frame after both teams traded baskets to start the half. UD would close the gap down by only one point after a jump shot from De'Sarae Chambers (31-32) at the 11:34 mark. Dayton would take its first lead since the beginning of the first half after a jumper from Moses, 40-39 at 7:04. From there the Flyers would go on a 12-0 run in a little over three minutes with seven points from Ross and five from Kayla Moses for a 42-39 lead with 6:28 left to play. The Mids would fight back with their own 6-0 run and Davidson would get up a last second tray with four seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime, 53-53. Lalor would start things out in overtime with a lay up and Daugherty would connect on UD's first three-point shot of the game. Five different Flyers would score in overtime as Navy could never regain the lead, eventually falling to Dayton 64-58. The UD women's basketball team will continue its season-opening road stretch next weekend at the Buckeye Classic hosted by Ohio State. The Flyers will face Central Michigan at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 29 in the first round. |
