DAYTON WOMEN FALL AT CHICAGO STATE, 79-65
Nov. 21, 2005
CHICAGO - Despite a double-double from Cara Wright, Dayton fell to Chicago State 79-65 in non-conference action on Monday at the Jacoby D. Dickens Center. Wright led UD (1-1) with 17 points and 11 rebounds, but was the only Flyer with double figures in either category. Dayton was outshot 51.7 percent to 41.9 percent from the field as UD hit 26-of-62 shots in the game overall. Terri Ramsey led the Flyer backcourt with seven assists while Karah Cloxton added three. "Our defensive intensity was not there tonight," Head Coach Jim Jabir said. "We need to get a better balance starting with tomorrow's game. These kids work hard and get after it and I know that we will turn it around soon." Wright was followed on the offensive end by Kiki Lund with nine points. The trio of Jennifer Strong, Brittney Holterman and Ramsey finished with eight points each. UD collected 36 rebounds as a team to CSU's 39. Amber Peterink and Nikki Oakland collected six and five respectively for the Flyers. Dayton fended off an 8-0 run to start the game by Chicago State by using a seven-point spurt of its own. Lund got UD on the board with a three-point shot at the 16:59 mark. Holterman and Cape followed with baskets of their own to make the score 8-7 just 48 seconds later. The Cougars would quickly stretch their lead to six by the 13:34 mark and UD would get no closer for the remainder of the half as CSU would build a lead of as many as 15 at 37-22 with 6:06 left in the half. Dayton entered the half trailing 44-32 as they were out shot 61.5 percent to 36.4 percent by the Cougars. Holterman led the Flyers with eight first-half points off the bench. She was followed by seven from Lund and five by Ramsey. UD led the battle of the boards 20-16 behind six rebounds from Wright. However, Dayton made just 5-of-9 free throws while Chicago State connected on 10-of-16 in a foul-plagued first 20 minutes. After trailing by 12 at the half, Dayton used an 8-4 run to tighten the game in the first 2:22 of the period. Ramsey engineered the run with a pair of drives to the basket that resulted in two made free throws as well as jump shots by Lund, Armstrong and Strong to make the score 48-40 with 17:38 remaining. CSU slowed UD's charge and countered to take a 15-point lead with 10:30 remaining. Wright kept Dayton in the game with 14 points the rest of the way, but the Flyers could not get within single digits and fell by a 77-65 margin. The Flyers remain in the Windy City to take on Loyola-Chicago on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET in the second game of its three-game road trip. |
