AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Dayton women's basketball team dropped its season opening game versus No. 13 Texas, 66-40, in the first day of the World Vision Classic on Saturday at the Frank Erwin Center.

The Flyers will face No. 25 Old Dominion on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 5:00 p.m. in day two of the tournament in a game that can be followed with Gametracker at www.DaytonFlyers.com.

Sophomore Kristin Daugherty led all scorers with 15 points in the game, 11 of which came in the first half. Daugherty also had a team-high three assists and two steals.

Five of Dayton's freshmen scored in the contest. Justine Raterman tallied four points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Casey Nance finished with three points, four rebounds, and two steals, while Patrice Lalor and Kayla Moses totaled three and two points, respectively.

Earnesia Williams and Erika Arriaran finished with 10 apiece to lead Texas. Williams 10 points came on 4-of-4 shooting from the field including 2-of-2 from three point range.

UD was out-rebounded 44-31 and Longhorns dominated bench points 37-8. Texas scored 25 points off of Dayton's 25 turnovers.

Poor shooting hurt UD as the team finished 14-of-50 (28 percent) from the field and 5-of-16 (31 percent) from three-point range. Texas went 27-of-64 (42.2 percent) from the field.

The Flyers, however, kept UT to only four fast break points and out-shot them from the line finishing 7-of-9 (77.8 percent) compared to UT's 6-of-10 (60 percent).

"Going in our game plan was to keep our freshmen from losing it," said head coach Jim Jabir. "We had to keep our composure against their pressure. We did a pretty good job on their posts and double-down. I don't think they hurt us as bad as I thought they would."

Texas got on early in the first half with six straight points, but Daugherty scored back-to-back three's to tie it up by the first media timeout.

UT turned it on from there with a basket from Arriaran and a three from Carla Cortijo to push the lead, 11-6. However, Daugherty put up another for Dayton with 12:58 left to play.

Arriaran netted two consecutive three's and Texas continued to pull away with a 10- 2 run.

Neither team would score for nearly a two minute time pan until Brittainey Raven made a shot from downtown at 5:36.

UD's Lalor would connect on a trey at 4:30 and it would be the last time Dayton would score in the half as Texas took the largest lead of the frame by 17 points with nearly two minutes to play.

Texas scored 16 points off of 15 Dayton turnovers in the first stanza and the Flyers shot 8-of-25 (32 percent) in the frame compared to Texas, who finished 18-of-31 (48 percent).

Daugherty would lead all scorers in the first half with 11 points, but UT had the advantage heading into the locker room, 37-20.

The Longhorns put one up first in the second half and Dayton would attempt to battle back with a 9-2 run after a bucket from Moses, a lay-up and three from Ross, and a basket from Raterman.

Texas wouldn't let it happen for too long and continued to dominate the game taking their largest lead by 23 points with 36 seconds left on the scoreboard. Texas closed out the game eventually winning 66-40.

"There were some silver linings as far as I'm concerned," said coach Jabir. "Texas could have beat us by 70 points. We fought. We battled. When you play against a great team you see your weaknesses. Ours were very visible. We saw what we need to work on that was a success for us. We can only get better."
