FLYERS DROP SEASON OPENER IN OVERTIME TO NORTHWESTERN, 76-70
Nov. 9, 2007
ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Double figure scoring efforts by seniors Brittany Holterman and Kiki Lund were not enough to for the Dayton women's basketball team as the Flyers fell to Northwestern, 76-70 in overtime at the Women's Sports Foundation Tournament hosted by the University of New Mexico. Holterman led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field to go along with six rebounds, five steals, two blocks and two assists in 41 minutes of action. Lund connected on 3-of-6 shots from three-point range to finish with 13 points for UD which hit on 6-of-19 shots from beyond the arc overall. Fellow senior Nikki Oakland added seven points and a team-best nine rebounds while sophomore Kendel Ross finished with eight points and a game-high tying five assists. Freshman Kristin Daugherty tallied seven points and pulled down six rebounds in her collegiate debut with all of her scoring coming in the second half. Senior Ashley Armstrong provided some quality perimeter defense on the night and finished with two of Dayton's 12 steals overall. UD connected on 26-of-75 shots overall (.389) while NU made 28-of-62 (.462) from the field. Dayton hit on 12-of-16 (.750) of its free throws and was nearly even in rebounding as the Wildcats held a 43-42 advantage. After a back-and-forth start, Northwestern built a 10-point lead at 26-16 with 7:44 remaining in the first half. However, Karah Cloxton countered for Dayton with a three from the wing just 12 seconds later to start a 12-0 Flyer run. Brittany Holterman followed with old fashioned three-point play on a layup and free throw. Holterman then stole the ball from the NU offense on the next trip down the court and was fouled, which allowed her to connect on one of two shots from the charity stripe. A layup by Kendel Ross and a jumper from Kiki Lund were sandwiched around a free throw by Nikki Oakland to give UD the lead 28-26 with 4:42 left in the half. The Flyers would take a 34-32 lead into the locker room at halftime on the strength of 15 first-half points by Brittany Holterman. She hit on 6-of-9 shots from the field and went 3-for-5 from the free throw line while tallying three steals, two blocks and one assist for the Flyers. Neither team would lead by more than seven in a tightly played second half that saw UD freshman Kristin Daugherty score her first collegiate basket on a layup with 7:22 left in regulation. She was also fouled on the play and made the free throw to start a stretch of five points from the forward in just 78 seconds. With the score knotted at 64-64, Northwestern's Jenny Eckhart hit a pair of free throws at the 1:27 mark to give the Wildcats a two-point lead. Kendel Ross finished off an active second half of play with a drive to the basket and a layup that evened the score again just 15 seconds later at 66-all. After a Northwestern turnover, both sides missed multiple opportunities to end the game in regulation. In overtime, NU hit on 4-of-9 shots from the field while UD could not overcome an 0-for-7 shooting effort and fell, 76-70. Dayton returns to action on Saturday against host New Mexico at "The Pit". The game is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. ET and can be followed with Gametracker at www.DaytonFlyers.com. |
