The Dayton women's basketball team capitalized on a stellar defensive effort in a 73-51 exhibition win over the Ohio Legends on Thursday at UD Arena. Sophomore Kristin Daugherty scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Flyers, while junior Kendel Ross added 16. Freshman Patrice Lalor chipped in with 11 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Dayton's stifling defense forced 26 turnovers, recorded 15 steals, and scored 15 points off turnovers. They held the Legends to 31 percent shooting. The Flyers connected on 30-of-64 field goal tries. Daugherty gave the Flyers the early lead by scoring Dayton's first 10 points of the game on 4-of-6 shooting. Leading 15-14, Dayton went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a Ross steal and lay-in after a missed three by freshman Justine Raterman. The stretch was capped off by a Ross three-pointer. A strong defensive effort kept the Ohio Legends off the scoreboard early. Dayton tallied seven steals in the first 14:30 of the game as they opened a 27-18 lead. With Daugherty on the bench for the final 5:00 of the half, the Flyers turned to Lalor and redshirt senior Ashley Brown, who combined for eight of Dayton's final 14 points of the half. UD led at halftime, 41-28. The Flyers came out of the locker room scorching, outscoring the Legends 11-2 in the first 4:40 of the half. Kendel Ross poured in seven points in that stretch to extend the lead to 52-30. Dayton's defense continued to hold strong as the Legends connected on only two field goal tries through the first 12:22 of the second half. A basket and free throw by Tamarah Riley at the 7:38 mark ended the Legends' drought and made the score 61-39. The Flyers had no trouble closing out the Legends en route to the 73-51 victory. Dayton will open the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 15 in Austin, Texas at the World Vision Classic. UD opens against the Texas Longhorns at 7:30 p.m. |
