FLYER DEFENSE STYMIES ST. BONAVENTURE

DAYTON, OH -- The University of Dayton women's basketball team held the St. Bonaventure Bonnies to 24.5 percent shooting and never trailed in a 55-41 win Friday night at UD Arena. Cara Wright recorded her fourth-straight double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds while Nikki Oakland and Terri Ramsey each added eight points. By holding the Bonnies to a season-low 41 points, Dayton improves to 12-14 overall and 6-9 in the Atlantic 10, while the Bonnies fall to 9-17 and 4-11in league play. Priscilla Edwards finished with 13 points and six rebounds for the Bonnies. Wright singlehandedly outscored the SBU starting front line, and matched their rebound total. She also blocked two shots and has recorded seven double-doubles in her last nine games. The Flyers held the Bonnies to just one field goal in the first 15:53 of the game. UD took a 4-1 lead on a pair of free throws from Angela Cape and a jumper from Wright. Each team opened the game 1-of-13 shooting before a three from Kiki Lund gave the Flyers a 9-3 edge. Wright hit one free throw and Lund put back her missed second attempt for a 12-3 lead with 6:47 remaining in the first half. Dayton extended the lead to 16-3 before the Bonnies knocked down their second field goal with 4:07 left in the first stanza. Priscilla Edwards was four-of-six from the line to pull within 20-13 before Nikki Oakland's free throw gave the Flyers a 21-13 lead at the half. The Flyers held St. Bonaventure to just 17.4 percent from the floor the first half on 4-of-23 shooting. Wright had five points and eight rebounds to lead the Flyers at the half, while Lund added five. Terri Ramsey canned a three-pointer to open the scoring in the second half, but Edwards answered with a three of her own for St. Bona. St. Bonaventure went to the press and pulled within four at 28-24. After a basket inside from Wright, Audrey Latendresse knocked down a three for St. Bona. The Flyers surged ahead to 35-28 on Wright's jumper and a three from Ramsey. But a three-point play from Bona's Stefanie Collins helped the Bonnies cut the lead to 35-33. Brittany Holterman crashed the boards for a put-back bucket and Cape's baby hook off the glass gave UD a 39-35 lead with nine minutes to go. Oakland scored seven straight Dayton points to push the lead back up to six at 46-38. The Flyers then got three straight baskets from Wright to pull away, 54-40. Each team made one free throw. The Flyers shot 60.9 percent in the second half on 14-of-23 shooting. Dayton hosts Richmond on Sunday at noon in the Atlantic 10 regular season finale. The Flyers will hold Senior Day festivities for guard Emily Williams prior to the game. |
