FLYERS DOMINATE PAINT FOR 75-65 WIN OVER LASALLE

DAYTON, OH - Cara Wright scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for her ninth double-double and Angela Cape added a career-high 16 points with nine boards as the University of Dayton women's basketball team downed the La Salle Explorers, 75-65, Sunday afternoon at UD Arena. Junior guard Terri Ramsey added a career-high 15 points on three-of-five from three-point range. Dayton improves to 11-12 overall and 5-7 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle falls to 10-13 and 4-8 in the A-10 The Flyers controlled the paint as Wright, Cape and freshman center Nikki Oakland combined to shoot 22-of-36 for 49 points. UD out-scored La Salle 38-14 in the paint and Dayton owned a 46-36 edge in rebounding, including a 23-13 advantage in offensive rebounds. Oakland finished with six points and six rebounds while Jennifer Strong added seven points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists. A three by Ramsey gave UD an early 7-4 lead but La Salle reeled off five-straight points before Cape's up and under move tied the game at 9-9. Dayton pulled within one at 21-20 on a lay-in from Cape before a three from La Salle's Davineia Payne. Emily Williams answered with a three and a baby hook from Cape gave UD a 25-24 lead. La Salle scored six of the next eight points prior to back-to-back threes from Ramsey made it a 35-33 La Salle lead at the half. Ramsey and Cape led all scorers with 10 points each at halftime. In the second, Wright and Cape opened up with back-to-back points in the paint for a 37-35 lead. Cape scored again for a 41-40 lead with 15:36 remaining and UD went on a 20-8 run over the next eight minutes. Strong gave UD a 47-41 lead and the Flyers kept pounding it inside to gain a 13-point lead. But the Explorers would come back, as Jill Marano knocked down a three to bring La Salle with seven at 61-54. Strong answered with a baseline runner and a three-point play from Wright restored the 10-point UD lead. La Salle got to the line to score with the clock off, cutting the lead to 66-61 with 2:50 to go. La Salle came within three at 66-63, before back-to-back baskets inside from Wright. Free throws by Ramsey put UD up 64-63, and the Flyers closed it from the line for a 75-65 win. The Flyers have their final regular season road trip next weekend, meeting Duquesne on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh and No. 20 Temple on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Philadelphia. |
