DAYTON, Ohio - Snow didn't delay the Flyers as Kendel Ross, Nikki Oakland and Karah Cloxton helped lift Dayton over the Fordham Rams, 69-38 on Sunday afternoon. Ross led the way for the Flyers with her first career double-double scoring 11 points and 10 rebounds in the second Atlantic 10 game of the season at UD Arena. With the win, Dayton improves to 7-12 overall and 2-2 in the A-10. The Flyers shot 43.8 percent from the field and 75.0 percent from the free throw line. UD out rebounded Fordham 49-29 and forced 20 Ram turnovers. Oakland added 13 points to go along with nine rebounds in just 15 minutes of action. Cloxton chipped in with 14 points and Brittany Holterman added eight points and four rebounds. UD scored 35 points off the bench including Amber Peterink's four points and five rebounds. Fordham connected on just 12-of -49 shots (.245) from the field including 4-of-28 (.143) in the second half. Daniela Roark led the Rams with 11 points. Fordham's leading scorer, Lisa Carroll, was limited to four points while dishing out five assists. It was the first time since December 18, 2001 that Dayton held an opponent to under 40 points when the Flyers defeated Wright State at home 89-34. In Atlantic 10 play, it was the first time since February 3, 2000 that the Flyers held an opponent under 40 points when UD won at La Salle 64-38. Both teams were slow to score at the start of the first half until a basket by Kathy Guin at 18:41 put the Flyers on the scoreboard. Fordham would then go on a 7-2 run until a jumper by Kiki Lund and nine consecutive points from a hot shooting Oakland helped Dayton to a 17-14 lead at 11:38. Cloxton followed with six points back-to-back with 10 minutes to go in the half. The Flyers went on a 9-3 run behind Ross who scored five points in just over a minute and Holterman who sunk two free throws and a jumper to give UD their biggest lead of the half by eight points. The two teams would trade baskets back and forth for the remainder of the session. Dayton would lead 32-26 heading into the locker room. The Flyers came out in the second half to extend their lead by 24 in a 19-1 run over more than seven minutes. Dayton didn't look back from there as they held Fordham to 14 percent shooting from the field goal range allowing the Rams to only score 12 points in the second half. Dayton closed out the game with a 69-38 victory. The Flyers are back in action as they host nationally-ranked Atlantic 10 opponent George Washington at UD Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m. ET against the #11/13 ranked Colonials. |
