WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FLOODED BY COLONIALS AT FRERICKS CENTER
Jan. 14, 2005
Dayton, OH - - The University of Dayton women's basketball team was forced to move Friday's game to the Frericks Center by high-water in the Miami River, and the George Washington Colonials poured it on the Flyers (7-8 overall, 1-3 Atlantic 10). GW (10-4; 3-0 A-10) used a 30-5 run to take control and defeat UD, 69-41, in front of 1,564 fans. Playing in the Frericks Center for the first time since January 23, 1985, the Flyers saw their six-game win streak in the building come to an end. UD's last loss at what was then known as the UD Fieldhouse came on February 5, 1977. Junior forward Cara Wright and freshman forward Brittany Holterman led UD with seven points a piece. Wright also grabbed six rebounds, while freshman forward Nikki Oakland had nine rebounds to go with five points. Anna Montanana scored a game-high 14 points with 13 rebounds for the Colonials. Kimberly beck added 13 points and six assists for GW. The Flyers fell behind early, 8-2, but answered with an 8-2 run of their own to tie the game at 10-10. Both teams tightened up their defenses creating a lot of turnovers. The Colonials established a 20-12 lead with 8:13 to go in the first half. But again, UD had an answer, Emily Williams found Katie Butler for a lay-up, and then Williams' steal set up a bucket inside from Wright. Williams again picked the pocket of a Colonial, which led to a pair of free throws for her. Holterman then stripped the ball and was fouled, and the ensuing foul shots cut the lead to 20-19. However, the one point gap was as close as the Flyers could get as the Colonials nailed three three-point shots in the next 90 seconds, taking a 10-point lead. The second half was all George Washington as the Colonials forced 13 UD turnovers and held UD to 31.8 percent shooting. Twenty-three of UD's 41 points came from the bench, as Butler finished with six and freshman guard Kiki Lund added a career-high five to join Oakland and Holterman. The Flyers, who entered the game leading the Atlantic 10 in rebounds, were out-boarded by the Colonials 41-34. Dayton had won six games in the Frericks Center from 1977 to 1985, before a 19-year stretch in which all home games were played at University of Dayton Arena. For the night, the Flyers admitted all fans for free and will do so on Sunday, as the Flyers host Rhode Island at the Frericks Center at 2:00 p.m. |
