ANDERSEN AND BARHORST TABBED AS A-10 PERFORMERS OF THE WEEK
Sept. 25, 2006 PHILADELPHIA - Another pair of University of Dayton student-athletes were honored by the Atlantic 10 Conference as Performers of the Week on Monday. Sophomore Mike Andersen earned his third A-10 Men's Cross Country honor of the season while senior Faye Barhorst was named the A-10 Volleyball Player of the Week for the second time this year. Andersen was the first athlete to cross the finish line at Penn State, placing first out of 297 runners in the 5.2 mile event. Although the Milford, Mich. native clocked in at a final time of 25:47; he broke UD's school record for the second consecutive week when he crossed the 8K split (5-mile marker) at 24:45. He improved his time from last week by 10 seconds. Andersen was also last week's A-10 Performer of the Week for his fourth place finish at Notre Dame where he broke UD's 8K record for the first time this year. In addition, he won the same honor earlier in the month at the Flyer 5K due to his near-record-setting effort in winning the event. Next up for Andersen and the rest of his teammates is the All-Ohio Championships on October 6th in Delaware, Ohio. Barhorst led Flyer volleyball to a pair of sweeps at George Washington and Charlotte to begin A-10 play. The senior middle blocker from Fort Loramie, Ohio averaged 5.00 kpg and 1.50 bpg as UD extended its regular-season conference winning streak to 14 matches. She recorded six block assists on the week to become UD's all-time career leader with 436. Barhorst was already on top of the Flyers' career list in hitting percentage and solo blocks. The UD volleyball team is 11-5 this season including a 2-0 mark in A-10 play. Dayton begins a six-match homestand this weekend against a pair of local rivals at Frericks Center. The Flyers play host to A-10 rival Xavier on Friday and Wright State on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. ET and can be followed live with Gametracker at www.DaytonFlyers.com. |
