The University of Dayton men's and women's cross country teams kickoff their 2006 seasons Saturday as they host the Flyer 5K Challenge at Indian Riffle Park in Kettering. Eight schools will compete in both the men's and women's competitions which begin at 10:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. respectively.

UD hosts the Flyer 5K Challenge for the eighth consecutive year and will be looking to regain the title at its own meet for the first time in at least four years. Battling for the title against the host Flyers are IPFW, IUPUI, Ohio Wesleyan, Miami (Ohio), Morehead State, Northern Kentucky and Xavier.

On the men's side, Dayton will look to win the Flyer 5K team title for the first time since 2002. Leading the charge is 2005 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Mike Andersen. He should be joined in the mix by teammates Eric Contreras, David Berning, Billy Przybyla and Matt Peters whom all scored for the UD men in the meet last season.

The Flyer women also look to capture their first team title since 2002. Senior Dianne Striebel as well as sophomores Amy Kempf and Jacqueline Jaworek are the top three returning harriers from last year's competition. Sophomore Anne Oltman also scored in last year's meet for Dayton.

Competitors for both sides could break meet records on Saturday as temperatures are expected to be in the mid 60s. Fans are invited to attend the race and remain for an awards ceremony and picnic lunch at Noon. A complete course map and directions to Indian Riffle Park can be found at www.DaytonFlyers.com.
