ANDERSEN SETS TWO SCHOOL RECORDS AT NATIONAL CATHOLIC INVITE

The University of Dayton men's and women's cross country teams competed Friday afternoon in the National Catholic Invite in South Bend, Indiana. The men's team placed sixth at the event while the women's team placed fifth overall at the meet. Sophomore Mike Andersen led the Flyers posting a fourth place finish in a time of 24:55 setting a school record for the fastest 8k time in UD history. Andersen is the only person to record a time under 25 minutes for the Flyers. In addition, his fourth place finish was also the highest individual finish for the Flyers at the National Catholic Invite in school history. Andersen improved his personal best time by 11 seconds. The other four runners to score at the meet included Eric Contreras (26:16), Matt Peters (27:10), Brian Gilchrist (27:35) and Tim Kaelin (27:58). The sixth and seventh finishers for the Flyers were Tommy Middleton (28:25) and Daniel Sammons (28:32), who displaced runners from 34 different teams. Notre Dame was the overall team winner for the men. The individual winner was John Riak of Saint Martin's University who ran in a time of 24:38. In the women's race, Freshman Colleen Donovan was UD's top female finisher placing 18th in a time of 19:02. Kristin Terry (19:17), Ellen Nienhaus (19:31), Dianne Striebel (19:33), and Bridget Conlon (20:06) were also among those Flyers to score at the Meet. The sixth and seventh Flyers, Alex Miles (20:08) and Angela Conlon (20:23) displaced runners from 31 teams. It was a tie for first place on the women's side as Notre Dame and Marquette University both scored 28 points at the meet. Notre Dame's Sunni Olding picked up her second-consecutive first place finish at the event with a time of 17:51. Next up for the Flyers is the Spiked Show Invite in State College, PA on September 23. |
