MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY KICKS OFF OUTDOOR TRACK SLATE
March 23, 2009
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Mike Andersen set his second school record in as many meets when the men's cross country team competed at the University of Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon. An additional University of Dayton record was set at the event, where five Flyers posted personal best times. UD swept the 1,500 meter run behind the strength of Andersen, a redshirt junior, who won the event in 3:52.91. That time bettered a 10-year-old mark set by Dan Moroney (3:55.1). Sophomores Chris and Matt Lemon filled out the top three spots, with Chris taking second in a personal best time of 3:56.22 and Matt placing third overall with his personal record mark (4:01.39). The Flyers also stood out in the 5,000 meter race, where three runners broke the 15-minute plane for the first time in program history. Andersen and the Lemon brothers each recorded personal bests again in the long distance trek, as did sophomore Ryan Shirley and redshirt junior Michael Peters. Matt set the second UD record of the day, lowering his previous top time by running in second position (14:32.38). Chris wasn't far behind and finished second overall in 14:35.65, while Andersen shot into sixth-place with a mark of 14:54.59. Shirley (15th, 15:47.53) and Peters (16th, 15:52.12) grabbed back-to-back slots in the standings with their personal best efforts. After an impressive first outdoor meet, the team will return to the same spot to continue the spring track season. The Flyers will travel, along with the women's track squad, to the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational at UC on Saturday, March 28. It will be an all-day event. |
