2006
As a red-shirt senior, David Berning brought tremendous leadership and experience to UD's squad. However, injuries flared up throughout the season letting him finish only two races for the Flyers, with each finish placing him in the top five for the team. This included a very strong performance at the Spiked Shoe Invitational where he ran 27:44 over 5.2 miles (26:34 over 8k) finishing as third man. His other finish was the Flyer 5K where he placed 23rd overall in a time of 16:19, earning him the fifth spot on the team.
2005
Berning competed in two races for the Flyers this season, finishing as third man at the Flyer 5k and fourth man at the National Catholic Invitational. After developing an injury, he was forced to red shirt the 2005 season. Berning served as team captain this season and will return next year as a red-shirt senior. He holds the seventh spot on the Harrier Heroes list with a personal-best time of 25:45.
2004
Berning had a strong spring track season, in which he set the school record in the indoor 3,000m run with a time of 8:51.57. In cross country, he improved his personal best time by 37 seconds with a 25:45 at the Mel Brodt Invitational. This gives him the 16th position on the Top 50 All Time 5 Mile Performances list, and ranks him 6th on the "Harrier Heroes" list. Hampered by injury, Berning was unable to compete in all eight varsity races. When healthy, he is one of the top Flyers on the course. Berning will serve as team captain next year.
2003
Berning placed among the top five Flyers in each of the season's first four meets. He was fourth-man at both the Flyer 5K Challenge and the National Catholic Championships. As third-man at the Mel Brodt Invitational, Berning lowered his Personal best to 26:22, ranking him 14th on the "Harrier Hero" list. A strained hamstring at the Cross Country Only National Championships resulted in fifth-man placing and affected his training and racing for the remainder of the season.
2002
Berning started off his intercollegiate athletic career with 1st-man finishes in each of his first two races. Finishing second overall at the Flyer 5K Challenge in 16:05 earned him Atlantic-10 "Performer of the Week" honors. Atlantic-10 "Rookie of the Week" honors were bestowed upon Berning following a team leading and Personal Best 26:30 effort at the Mel Brodt Invitational. After developing breathing difficulties, Berning completed three of the six remaining meets, placing out of the top-7. Berning looks to return healthy in 2003 holding 13th position on the Harrier hero list.
