MEN'S TENNIS ANNOUNCES YEAR-END AWARDS
May 10, 2006 Dayton, OH - Following the end of a successful season, the Flyer men's tennis squad announced its end of the year awards for the '05-'06 season. At the team's post-season banquet it was announced that Junior Tom Murphy was the recipient of the White Allen Most Valuable Player Award. Junior Rex Cabrera was named the team's most improved player, while senior Jamison Downs was given the Coaches' Award. Murphy helped lead the Flyers to a 12-13 record and a fourth place finish at the A-10 tournament this season. After posting a 15-6 record this spring, all at first singles, he was also named first team all-conference for the third consecutive season. Murphy also went 15-7 in doubles play this year working with senior Jamison Downs. Downs, the winner of the Coaches' Award, was the lone senior on this year's team. Along with his stellar doubles play, Downs also compiled an 8-12 record playing at the four spot. A four-year letterwinner, Downs also received a special ring to commemorate his contributions during his career. The other award winner, Cabrera, who was named the team's most improved player posted an 11-11 record playing mostly at third singles. While the records are deceiving (Cabrera put up a 17-7 record during his sophomore campaign) the third-year letterwinner stepped up three spots in the line-up after playing mostly sixth singles last season. Cabrera will be looked to as a key contributor for next season as well. |
