WARNOCK AND WIEGAND LEAD MEN'S TENNIS AT VALPO INVITE

Sophomore Bryce Warnock and freshman Austin Wiegand led Dayton to seven singles wins on the opening day of the Valpo Invitational on Friday. Warnock and Wiegand were each 2-0 in Flight B singles, and advanced to square off against each other in Saturday's semifinal. Warnock posted a 6-4, 6-1 win in the first round match against Youngstown State's Steve D'Angelo. His quarterfinal match was not as easy, but Warnock pulled out a 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 victory to reach the semis. Wiegand posted a pair of straight-set wins. He breezed by Brian Zaron of Green Bay 6-2, 6-1 before routing Valparaiso's Kevin DeHerrara 6-2, 6-4 in the quarters. In Flight C singles, sophomore Michael Koscielski advanced to Saturday's semifinals with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Green Bay's Mike Wesley. Freshmen Philip Dresden and Lukasz Chowaniec each reached the quarterfinals before falling. In doubles action, Dayton posted two wins in Flight A. Wiegand and junior Matt Sherman won their quarterfinal match over Matt Clegg and Matt Keesey of Green Bay, 8-5. Also in the quarterfinals, junior Michael Rohana and senior David Peyton bounced UIC's Danny Wilson and Nathan Kirk, 8-4. Both tandems will play in Saturday's semifinals. The Flyers will wrap up play at the Valpo Invite on Saturday. |
