FLYERS IN FOURTH AFTER DAY ONE ACTION AT TOLEDO INVITE
Sept. 19, 2008 The men's tennis team opened the 2008 fall campaign at the Toledo Invitational on Friday. Dayton finished day one in fourth place with two points. The Flyers earned their points with wins over Denison in the Flight B singles division and Indiana State in the doubles division. Each dual match was decided by the best-of-three courts, and Dayton's win over Denison was a dominating 3-0 sweep. Freshmen Austin Wiegand and Andrew Nixon each won in straight sets over their opponents, while sophomore Bryce Warnock outlasted Evan Verbofsky in a third set super tiebreak, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. Dayton's doubles victory over Indiana State also included a pair of convincing victories. Warnock teamed with sophomore Michael Koscielski to defeat Blake Douglas and Chris Finney, 8-4, in a pro set. Senior David Peyton paired with Wiegand for an 8-2 win over Michael Wenham and Jon Siguidosso. Other day one Flyer victories included Peyton defeating Wright State's Jan Alafriz 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 in the Flight A singles division, and Nixon beating Toledo's Skyler Engel in Flight B singles. Homestanding Toledo is in the lead after day one with six points. The Flyers will resume play Saturday morning with a doubles match against Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne. Saturday's schedule includes a total of two doubles matches and three singles matches for Dayton. |
