MEN'S TENNIS BOWS TO TOLEDO
March 24, 2006
Toledo, OH - The UD men's tennis squad traveled to Toledo on Friday evening only to endure a fourth consecutive loss on Friday evening. Dayton was only able to take the top two singles flights in a 5-2 drubbing. The recent four game skid has been the longest of the season for UD. While Toledo is formidable at home this season (they boast an 11-0 record on their own turf), UD has some work to do with just six matches remaining on the spring season. The A-10 Tournament is rapidly approaching and the Flyers (7-9) have fallen two games under the .500 mark for the first time since February 4th when the team record was 1-3. Junior Tom Murphy (11-3) got back on track after losing a match to Alejandro Nery at Bonaventure last week. Murphy claimed a 5-7, 6-4, 10-5 win over Toledo's Chris Clark at first singles and has yet to lose consecutive singles matches this year. Sophomore James O'Connell (11-3) won his first set 6-2 and his opponent, Tony Tran, retired whilst down 2-0 in the second set. It was O'Connell's third straight victory. After the first two flights, however, things grew dim for the Flyers. Senior Jamison Downs (4-8) lost his match with Jared Miller 6-1, 6-0 and freshmen David Peyton (5-11) and Brad Roby (5-9) followed suit (each losing 6-1, 6-1). Finally, sophomore Chris Jones (1-5) was shutout in his sixth singles match with Cristobal Toral. The final score was 6-0, 6-0. UD was also swept in doubles action for the fifth time this season. Next up for the Flyers will be Wittenberg University at the NCR courts. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM on Monday afternoon. |
