DAYTON MEN'S TENNIS STYMIED BY BUFFALO
March 15, 2006
Hilton Head, S.C. - Originally scheduled to play two games on Tuesday, men's tennis got the afternoon off when rain forced the cancellation of their noon match with Missouri Valley. However, the latter game of the scheduled double header went off without a hitch and the Flyers fell in a hard fought match to the University of Buffalo. The 4-3 defeat was the second in a row for the Flyers. The Flyers could only manage two wins in singles play, but junior Tom Murphy won for the tenth time on the year. Murphy took care of business against Mike Rockman 7-6 (6), 6-3. The win pushed his overall record on the year to 10-2, all at first singles, with just one loss to a conference opponent. At third singles, junior Rex Cabrera evened his singles record at 6-6 on the year by defeating Yules Hadisubroto 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. In doubles play the Flyers controlled the Bulls, winning two of three matches. Senior Jamison Downs and his partner, Murphy, defeated Hadisubroto and Nikesh Singh Panthlia 8-6 at first doubles. The pairing of Downs and Murphy has worked out great for the Flyers this season, and the two moved their doubles record to 7-3 on Tuesday. Another tandem having success has been the combo of Cabrera and sophomore James O'Connell. They teamed up to beat Mike Rockman and Albert Alant 9-7 on Tuesday and have fashioned a 7-4 record (mostly at second doubles). With the team just one game over .500 at 7-6 on the spring season, the Flyers will be looking to rebound quickly. They will try to do just that against Denison on Wednesday at 3:00 P.M. as the team will remain in Hilton Head, South Carolina. |
