MEN'S TENNIS TAKES FIRST SPRING BREAK MATCH 4-3
March 13, 2007
Fort Myers, FL - The Dayton men's tennis squad began their spring break trip with a 4-3 win over Fairleigh-Dickinson on Monday afternoon. The Flyers, now 6-9 overall, have won two of their past three matches. It was the first time this season Dayton has won without receiving a point from the first singles slot. Tom Murphy (12-3) has cooled lately, the senior has dropped three of his past four matches, after a blistering 11-0 start. On Monday, however, several Flyers picked up the slack. Dayton began the match by securing the doubles point with two wins. At first doubles, Murphy and junior James O'Connell pushed their record to 6-6 with an 8-6 win over the Knights' Phil Stephens and Alex Nace. Freshman Michael Rohana and sophomore Antonio Rodriguez picked up a win --their first of the season -- at third singles, 8-6 over FDU's Esteban Blanko and Justin Seow. Rohana (2-9), playing at the second spot, was also a winner in singles. The freshman secured his second singles win of the season 6-3, 6-2 over Priit Gross. Senior Rex Cabrera (7-6) followed suit at third singles with his seventh spring victory. Cabrera and Nace went three sets, but Cabrera came out on top 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Dayton dropped the fourth singles match, but sophomore David Peyton (5-8) recorded his second straight singles win at the five spot for the Flyers. Peyton's 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3 win over FDU's Kyle Eddins secured the match for UD. Dayton has two more matches scheduled over spring break. The Flyers will play Wisconsin-Green Bay today at 1:00 p.m. and Florida Gulf Coast tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. |
