BONNIES BRUSH OFF FLYERS, 5-2
Feb. 24, 2007
Olean, NY - It has been a long, rough week for the UD men's tennis team. The Flyers saw a two-match winning streak snapped at home to Xavier on Tuesday, and have now dropped two road matches in the past two days. Saturday's loss, a 5-2 decision to the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, drops Dayton's record to 4-8 overall and 2-3 in the Atlantic 10. Junior James O'Connell and Senior Rex Cabrera netted the Flyers only two points with singles wins on Saturday afternoon. It was the first time this season that senior Tom Murphy failed to contribute a point in a Dayton match. That's because St. Bonaventure's Alejandro Nery knocked off Murphy at the first singles position -- something that no other Flyer opponent has been able to do this year. Murphy had run off eleven straight singles wins going into Saturday's match with the Bonnies. Nevertheless, Nery bested Murphy in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. It was just the second time this spring an opponent of Murphy's was even able to take one set from the Flyers' co-captain. O'Connell managed to snag his eighth singles win of the season, however, playing in the second spot. O'Connell, who has the second best singles record on the team at 8-4, defeated Bonaventure's Diego Valdenegro in a three-setter 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Cabrera was the other winner at the four spot for the Flyers. He pushed his spring record to 6-5 with the victory. In the match, Dayton's other senior co-captain was able to hold off Bona's Jonathan Luce 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. UD will be back in Ohio tomorrow, but will play its third straight road match in three days on Sunday to conclude a very busy weekend for the squad. Tomorrow's match-up with Youngstown State is slated to begin at 8:00 a.m. The Flyers will then have a weeks reprieve before heading to Indianapolis to face Butler on March 6 at 3:00 p.m. |
