Feb. 18, 2007
Dayton, OH - The University of Dayton men's tennis team came out of a Saturday double-header as winners in both of their matches. In the morning match against George Washington UD improved to 2-0 against A-10 foes with a 4-3 win. The team followed that with an evening victory over the IUPUI Jaguars 6-1. With the wins, the Flyers have crept back to within one win of the .500 mark at 4-5 overall. They have now won four of their last six matches since an 0-3 start to the spring. Against George Washington, UD secured the doubles point early on before claiming three of the six singles points to sneak past the Colonels. The tandem of senior Tom Murphy and junior James O'Connell dispatched GW's Sam Salyer and Brandon Harris 8-3 in the first doubles match, before seeing the freshmen duo of Matt Sherman and Michael Rohana beat Mark Doumba and Elliott Daniels 8-5. In singles the Flyers received wins from the top two spots, but it was Rex Cabrera who sealed the win playing in the fourth position. Cabrera, who is now 4-4 on the spring, defeated Doumba 6-4, 6-3 in the deciding match. Murphy was also a winner at first singles, where he improved his personal record to 9-0, defeating Mustafa Gencsoy 7-6 (5), 6-2. O'Connell also won handily, playing at second singles, over Salyer 6-1, 6-2. In the 5:00 match with the Jaguars, Dayton claimed the doubles point right off the bat. The squad also swiped five singles points in the process, leading them to their largest margin of victory this spring. In doubles O'Connell and Murphy were winners again, this time over IUPUI's Gabriel Garcia and Javier Saab 8-3. Rohana and Sherman also came away with another win at the third doubles position, defeating Tsuyoshi Yamabe and Dean Guyer 8-3. UD dropped just one singles match in the win and saw freshman Wesley Hartig pick up his first win of the spring. Hartig won in a thriller, which saw three tie-breakers, against Blake Powers 6-7 (6), 7-6 (2), 7-6 (1). In the other matches, Murphy was a winner again for UD at first singles knocking off Garcia 6-1, 6-1. O'Connell improved his spring record to 7-2 with his win over Javier Saab 6-2, 6-2. Cabrera also won again for Dayton, this time in the third position, over Ross Gehlhausen 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Finally, sophomore David Peyton took down Tsuyoshi Yamabe in his match at fifth singles 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. The Flyers will be looking for their third win in a row on Tuesday when they take on arch-rival Xavier at Dayton Center Courts. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 PM. |
