MEN'S TENNIS SNATCHES FIRST WIN FROM BILLIKENS
Feb. 3, 2007
St. Louis, MO - Some roster tinkering may have helped spark a Dayton win over St. Louis in A-10 play on Friday afternoon. Senior Tom Murphy got a new doubles partner in the match and the men's tennis team, now 1-3 on the season, consequently won their first doubles point of the year. Dayton also got singles wins from Murphy, junior James O'Connell, and freshman Matt Sherman en route to besting the Billikens. In picking up the doubles point, the Flyers secured two matches. One from the new tandem of Murphy and O'Connell, who defeated SLU's Paul Feder and Sean McManus 8-3. The two all-conference performers now have a 7-3 all-time doubles record, playing together 10 times since last fall. UD picked up another win at second doubles from the new pairing of senior Rex Cabrera and sophomore David Peyton, who knocked off Felipe Acosta and P.J. Hendrie 8-4. The Flyers then split the singles points with the Billikens, but it was enough to come away with a win. The first few competitions of the season were characterized by wins from Murphy and O'Connell. The Flyers have come to expect two points from their two anchors at the top of the line-up, but the team was always left looking for another singles point that could not be found. Yesterday it was Sherman (1-3) who stepped up and gave the Flyers what they needed. Playing in the fifth singles position, the freshman won his first match of the spring against SLU's Paul Feder 6-3, 6-4. Murphy (4-0) won handily at first singles 6-1, 6-0 against Acosta. He remains undefeated on the season, and has not been seriously challenged by any of his matches thus far. O'Connell (3-1) also continued his good play at the three spot, picking up a win against Hendrie 6-0, 6-1. After today's match against Washington University the Flyers will travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana for a 1:00 p.m. match-up with IPFW on Tuesday. |
