University of Dayton men's soccer coach Dave Schureck has resigned to assume the same position at his alma mater, Xavier University, it was announced today.

Schureck, 31, was 57-33-8 in five seasons at UD, including a 35-15-3 Atlantic 10 conference record. Schureck led the Flyers to one regular season Atlantic 10 Championship and four top-three conference finishes. He also guided UD to its highest national ranking in 2003, as UD was ranked for eight of the 11 weeks of the regular season, peaking at No. 8.

Schureck developed three All-Americas for UD: R.J. Kaszuba, 2000; Denny Clanton, 2003; and Chris Rolfe, 2004. Clanton is now playing Major League Soccer with the Chicago Fire, and Rolfe was one of 66 players invited to the MLS Player Combine leading up to January's MLS SuperDraft.

"The opportunity to return to Xavier as its first full-time head coach was something I could not pass up," Schureck said. "UD gave me my first head coaching job and I believe we've built up a strong program there, but the pull to return to where I played and first coached was too strong."

Schureck started in goal for Xavier from 1991-94. He started all but one game in his collegiate career. The three-time captain collected many accolades while at XU. He was team MVP in 1991, All-Ohio in 1991 and 1994, and Academic All-Mideast all four years. Schureck was also a member of the Cincinnati Classics Region II Men's Open Champions in 1995.

He served as an assistant at X for one season before coming to Dayton. Before being named UD's head coach in 2000, he was a Flyer assistant for three seasons.

At Xavier, Schureck will succeed his college coach, Jack Hermans, as the Musketeer head coach.

"We appreciate what Dave has accomplished as our head coach," UD Vice-President/Director of Athletics Ted Kissell said. "Thanks to his efforts, the resourcing of the program and our recent upgrade to Baujan Field, the future is bright for our men's soccer program. We wish Dave the best of luck at Xavier, and will be rooting for him against all but one team."

Dayton was 11-7-1 last season, finishing second in the Atlantic 10. The Flyers were knocked out of the A-10 tournament in the semifinals. The Flyers will return 22 letterwinners and seven starters for 2005.

A national search for a new coach will begin immediately.
