DAYTON, Ohio - University of Dayton's Alex Torda was named a second team selection to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men's Soccer Teams, which were announced Wednesday.

"I am extremely proud of Alex for all his accomplishments. He has been such a huge part of this program since he got here," said Dayton Head Men's Soccer Coach Dennis Currier. "He deserves every honor that is bestowed on him because of how hard he works for it. He is a true role model for all student-athletes."

Torda carries a 3.63 GPA in entrepreneurship and finance at Dayton.

Torda made Flyer history when he became the first soccer player to be named to the Hermann Trophy Watch list. He backed up the billing with a stellar junior campaign, notching a team-high 10 goals, including seven in Atlantic 10 games. Torda was a Second Team All-Atlantic 10 selection after a regular season in which he was named two-time conference Player of the Week and honored to three all-tournament teams.

A First Team All-District IV CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine All-Academic selection, Torda was also named to the 2008 A-10 Men's Soccer Academic All-Conference Team.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
