SWANSON SCORES TWICE AS MEN'S SOCCER ROLLS AT XAVIER, 5-1
Nov. 6, 2004 The UD men's soccer team stomped Xavier, 5-1, Saturday afternoon to end the regular season at 11-6-1 overall and 8-3-0 in the Atlantic 10. Freshman Aaron Swanson scored the first two goals of his Flyer career, while Omar Jarun tallied his team-leading ninth of the year, Chris Rolfe netted his seventh and Dasan Robinson his second. The Flyers opened the scoring in the 27th minute as Robinson (Elyria, OH) headed in a corner kick from Rolfe (Kettering, OH). Ten minutes later, Swanson struck for his first as Rolfe set him up on a breakaway and the freshman from Ft. Wayne, IN beat Xavier keeper Brian Schaeper for a 2-0 lead. Dayton took that lead into the half, owning a 9-4 edge in shots. In the second half, Jarun (Peachtree City, GA) struck a ball off Schaeper and into the net for his team-leading ninth of the year. The Flyers poured it on as Rolfe took a breakout pass from Antti Arst (Tallin, Estonia) and slipped it into the bottom right corner for his seventh of the year at the 65:48 mark. But after watching Rolfe score two goals in a game the past two games, Swanson decided he should be the one to double up in the goal column, and capped the scoring off an assist from Brennen Randquist (Hudson, OH) with 1:41 to go. Flyer keeper Matt Troop (Peachtree City, GA) was 11 seconds from his third shutout of the year before X spoiled his bid with a goal by Jon Enders in the last seconds. Troop finished with three saves for his ninth win of the year. Dayton has won 11 of 14, outscoring opponents 36-19 in that stretch. The Flyers have pummelled their opposition the last three games, with a 13-2 goal differential versus Fordham, LaSalle and Xavier. Rolfe now has three-straight games with four or more points, 18 in his last six games and 24 in 10 starts this season. The Flyers lock up the number-two seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship and a bye until the semifinals, Dayton will play in the second game Friday against either Temple or the winner of George Washington and Rhode Island. |
