MEN'S SOCCER MOVES INTO FIRST WITH 2-1 WIN AT RICHMOND
Oct. 22, 2004 The University of Dayton men's soccer team came away with a 2-1 win at Richmond Friday night. Tye Stebbins tied the match and Omar Jarun tallied his fourth game-winner of the season as the Flyers move into first place in the Atlantic 10. Steven Wolfe got Richmond on the board with a goal in the 19th minute as Callum Thomas sent a restart into the line and Wolfe was there to bury the deflection. Dayton out-shot the Spiders 9-5 in the first stanza, but the 1-0 Richmond lead held up into the break. In the 58th minute, senior forward Chris Rolfe (Kettering, OH) sent a cross from the left side to the 10 yard line where Stebbins (Zionsville, IN) blasted it home to knot the match at 1-1. Just under four minutes later, sophomore midfielder Antti Arst (Tallinn, Estonia) served the ball in from the right side to the head of Jarun (Peachtree City, GA). The 6-5 forward buried it off the left post and into the net for the go-ahead goal. Dayton held on for the win by out-shooting Richmond 8-6 in the second half and 17-11 for the match. Steve Ladislaw (Philadelphia) shutout Richmond for 49 minutes after replacing Matt Troop (Peachtree City, GA), who re-aggravated the injury which caused him to miss last Sunday's win over Rhode Island. Ladislaw made two saves in net for his second win of the year. The Flyers improve to 8-5-1 overall and 5-2-0 in the Atlantic 10. Dayton is now tied with Duquesne -- whom UD beat, 1-0, on October 8th - atop the Atlantic 10 standings. Richmond falls to 2-10-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the A-10. Dayton is at George Washington on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. before returning home to Baujan Field next weekend for A-10 matches with Fordham and La Salle. |
