FIVE FLYERS SCORE AS MEN'S SOCCER BLITZES SAINT JOSEPH'S 5-1
Oct. 8, 2004 Five Flyers each had a first-half goal as the UD men's soccer team romped in a 5-1 win over Saint Joseph's Friday night at Baujan Field. George Nanchoff (North Royalton, OH) tallied a goal and two assists as UD improves to 5-4-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the Atlantic 10. Tye Stebbins (Zionsville, IN), Omar Jarun (Peachtree City, GA), Chris Rolfe (Kettering, OH), and Mpoki Tenende (Missouri City, TX) also scored for the Flyers. Rolfe was taken down in the box in the fifth minute and Stebbins scored on the penalty kick for a 1-0 lead. In the seventh minute, Rolfe found Nanchoff on the right side, and Nanchoff served a cross into the box which Jarun headed home for his third goal of the season. In the 27th minute, Nanchoff played the ball wide to freshman Aaron Swanson (Ft. Wayne, IN), who sent a cross to Rolfe. Rolfe had a wide open net to shoot at and buried it for his second of the season. Damion Blackburn (Beavercreek, OH) picked up his first career point setting up Nanchoff's goal. Blackburn slotted a ball to spring Nanchoff for the breakaway goal, his second of the year, at the 39:30 mark. Just 23 seconds later, Tenende capped the scoring for UD as Dasan Robinson (Elyria, OH) set up the junior forward for his first goal of the year. Tenende broke down his defender one on one and beat the keeper to the left side. Matt Troop (Peachtree City, GA) played the first half in net for UD and made three saves for his fifth win of the year. Steve Ladislaw (Philadelphia, PA) played the second half with a save and a goal allowed. Matt Wurst tallied for the Hawks in the 55th minute. The Flyers out-shot Saint Joseph's 21-8 and held a 15-6 lead in shots on goal. Of UD's first 13 shots, 11 found the frame as UD jumped out to the 5-0 lead in the first. Stebbins goal was his fifth of the season as he now leads UD with 12 points. With a four-point night, Nanchoff now has nine points on two goals and five assists. Saint Joseph's falls to 1-8-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the A-10. Dayton hosts Temple on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Baujan Field before a New England road trip next weekend to meet Massachusetts and Rhode Island. |
