BADGERS DUMP MEN'S SOCCER AT BIG TOE INVITATIONAL
Sept. 5, 2004 The University of Dayton men's soccer team fell to the Wisconsin Badgers, 4-1, Sunday in the final game of the Big Toe Soccer Invitational. Nate Darr (Centerville, OH) tallied the Flyers' goal and was named to the All-Tournament Team with Tye Stebbins (Zionsville, OH). Dayton (0-1-1) played without last season's regular leading scorer Chris Rolfe (Kettering, OH), who sat out his second-straight game as he recovers from offseason surgery. Last year, Rolfe came off the bench to tally twice against the Badgers as UD came from behind at home to win 3-2 over Wisconsin at Baujan Field. The Flyers fell behind in the eighth minute as Jed Holbein tallied his first of three goals. Holbein struck again in the 16th minute as Wisconsin took a 2-0 lead into the break. After Holbein's third made it a 4-0 game in the 62nd minute, Darr scored the lone Flyer goal in the 84th minute off an assist from George Nanchoff (North Royalton, OH). The Flyers out-shot Wisconsin 13-7, but four of the Badgers shots found the back of the net. Officials called 38 fouls and issued 11 cards. Dayton played the final five minutes without Darr, who was issued his second yellow card. Darr will miss UD's next contest, which is Friday at Michigan. Last season, the Flyers beat Michigan 4-2 in the season opener before UM's run the NCAA Elite Eight. Following the 7:00 p.m. contest in Ann Arbor, the Flyers face Michigan State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Dayton returns to Baujan Field for the Dayton Marriott Flyer Classic September 17 and 19. UD will meet Evansville and Wright State, with DePaul rounding out the field. |
