MEN'S SOCCER OPENS SPRING SEASON WEDNESDAY MORNING
March 30, 2005 Head Coach Dennis Currier got his first look at his Dayton Flyers Wednesday morning as the UD men's soccer team took on the Cincinnati Kings. The Flyers scored two late goals -- both by Damion Blackburn -- but fell, 3-2, at Baujan Field. The Cincinnati Kings are a pro team in the United Soccer Leagues Second Division, two divisions below Major League Soccer. After the two teams played a scoreless first half, Cincinnati opened the scoring with a break-away goal in the 64th minute. The Kings added another two before Blackburn came in on a break of his own and buried a shot to the far post in the 84th minute. Three minutes later, Blackburn took a restart and ripped a shot over the wall and into the top of the net to pull UD within one at 3-2. But the Flyers couldn't find the equalizer in the final two and half minutes. Nick Tarkany played all 90 minutes in goal for the Flyers with three saves. The Flyers host a four-team tournament on Sunday at Baujan Field. UD takes on Ohio State at noon, followed by Bowling Green versus Louisville. Dayton meets Bowling Green in the third game, followed by Louisville versus Ohio State. |
