MEN'S SOCCER FALLS AT XAVIER, 1-0
Nov. 8, 2008 CINCINNATI, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 1-0 loss to local rival Xavier Saturday evening. The Flyers fell to 12-4-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the Atlantic 10 with the loss, while the Musketeers improved to 3-12-3 overall and 2-5-2 in the league. UD is guaranteed a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship next week in Pittsburgh. The Championship will be held November 13-16 at Duquesne's Rooney Field. The Flyers are still in contention for a first round bye in the tournament. First, however, Charlotte needs to defeat Massachusetts and/or La Salle needs to defeat Temple Sunday afternoon. The Flyers are also still in the hunt for the regular season A-10 Championship if UMass loses and Temple loses or ties. Both teams were scoreless in the first half as XU out-shot Dayton 7-6. The Musketeers got on board nearly five minutes into the second frame as Jake Vollmer scored on a double-assist from El-Hadji Dieng and Jimmy Cummings. Dayton would out-shoot the Musketeers in the second stanza (14-7), but could never quite find the net. Xavier's goalkeeper Adam Sokolowski finished with seven saves on the night, while Dayton's Tyler Picard had five. For more information on the Flyers postseason log onto www.DaytonFlyers.com. |
