Matt Barnes is entering his third season as an assistant coach for the men's soccer program. In his first year on staff as the goalkeeper coach, Barnes helped UD to an overall record of 11-7-1, a second place finish in the A-10, and a berth into the semifinals of the A-10 tournament. Last year, UD goalkeepers posted on goals against average of 1.65, to go along with three shutouts. In 2005, UD was third in the A-10 with a GAA of 0.94, with six shutouts, which was also third in the A-10.

Prior to joining UD, Barnes spent nine years as a high school coach. His last four years were at Piqua High School, where he was the head coach of the boys' varsity team. He is the second-winningest coach in the program's history, and was voted Dayton North High School Coach of the Year in 2003.

In addition to his high school experience, Barnes brings with him an extensive club background. He is currently a staff coach and goalkeeper trainer for the Southern Ohio Soccer Academy and Metro F.C. He also continues to work as an Ohio South ODP coach.

A native of the Dayton area, Barnes resides in Kettering with his wife, Devon, and their two children, Peyton and Zoe. Barnes holds a USSF `C' license and NSCAA Goalkeeping Diploma. He is a 2005 graduate of Franklin University with a degree in Business Administration.
