CHAPPELL IN THE HUNT AFTER ROUND ONE OF THE U.S. AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Aug. 18, 2008
PINEHURST, N.C. - Dayton Flyers senior Rob Chappell finished the first round of the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship with an even-par 70, just three strokes back of the leader. Chappell tied for 21st overall by recording two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars in his championship debut. He was one under after the first nine holes thanks to birdies on holes five and nine. Playing on Pinehurst's No. 4 course, Chappell recorded par every hole in the back nine except hole 15. Sophomore Zach Glassman joined Chappell at the U.S. Amateur and completed the first round eight over par with a total of 78. Glassman was four over par on both the back and front nine playing on Pinehurst No 2. He finished up netting par in five of the last six holes played. The field is cut to 64 players for match play after Tuesday's second round. Match play begins on Wednesday, August 20 and continues until the 36-hole final on Sunday, August 24. The tournament is played on Pinehurst courses No. 2 and No. 4. Chappell is a First Team, All-Atlantic 10 selection and the 2008 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year. Glassman helped the Flyers to a second place finish in the 2008 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship and finished his freshman season averaging 74.8 strokes per round. The duo are believed to be the first UD golfers to qualify for the U.S. Amateur since Jack Zimmerman Sr., who played in three during his post-Flyer days, the last at Pinehurst in 1962. |
