UD TO HOST SPRING INVITATIONAL ON MONDAY & TUESDAY
April 20, 2007 There are sure signs that spring is upon us. Whether it's a runny nose and scratchy throat from allergies, or maybe the annual trip to the attic to get your shorts out of storage, you can tell when spring is on the horizon. An undeniable foreshadowing to spring in Dayton, Ohio comes from the UD Spring Invitational. The University of Dayton will host its annual tournament on Monday and Tuesday at the historic NCR Country Club. Both days feature a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET, with 36 holes being played on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. For UD head coach Drew Tyrer it's a tournament with excitement and support from the Dayton community. "Our players have been looking forward to this event for months," Tyrer said. "The staff and members of NCR Country Club have been very supportive and we anticipate dozens of family members and alumni coming out to support our team." For the first time this season all 10 Dayton golfers will participate in a tournament. UD will feature an `A' and a `B' team. This spring season Dayton is averaging 320.69 strokes per round. But Tyrer said the familiarity of the NCR South Course should help the Flyers and give them an opportunity to win their first tournament of the year. In order to accomplish that goal, UD will have to fend off challenges from a talented 12-team field that includes Bowling Green State, Butler, Canisius, Cleveland State, Duquesne, IPFW, Malone, St. Joseph's, University of Waterloo (Canada), Wisconsin Green Bay, Wright State and Youngstown State. Cleveland State won last year's tournament with a total score of 905. "We hope the tournament is a memorable experience for our players and our visiting teams," said Tyrer. "College golfers do not have the privilege to play such a renowned golf course such as the South Course at NCR. The best player and best team will truly win this event. We hope both of those victors are Flyers." Last year the Flyers finished in seventh with sophomore Rob Chappell leading the way with a three-round score of 233. He shot rounds of 75, 79 and 79 to finish 10th overall. In 2007 Chappell ranks second on the team with a 79.6 stroke average. Just in front of him is senior Sam Morton with a 79.5 average. Morton has come on strong with a recent surge. He led the Flyers at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate finishing tied for 34th, his best finish of the spring season. Last year at the UD Spring Invitational, Morton led the `B' squad after shooting a three-round total of 235. The South Course, a par 71 covering 7,055 yards of heavily-wooded rolling hills, has long been considered championship caliber and voted among Golf Digest's "Top 100" courses in the nation. The South Course was the site for the 51st PGA Championship, won by Raymond Floyd, the 41st U.S. Women's Open, won by Jane Geddes, and the 1998 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship won by "Spider" Miller and will be the future site of the 2005 US Senior Open.
