ZACH GLASSMAN & FLYERS WIN THE LEO KEENAN INVITATIONAL
Oct. 6, 2008
OLEAN, N.Y. - Sophomore Zach Glassman won the individual medalist award as the Dayton Flyers captured their first tournament championship under head coach Chris Hale at the 2008 Leo Keenan Invitational. Glassman won the tournament after shooting back-to-back rounds of 71 for his first career individual championship. But Glassman had to win a a seven-hole playoff against teammate Rob Chappell, the 2008 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year. Chappell stormed back from a first-round 76 to a 66 in round two. The 66 is not only his season best but also tied for the second lowest round in Leo Keenan Tournament history. The duo helped the Flyers capture the tournament championship with a team score of 593, edging out Temple by one stroke. It's the first team championship since the Flyers won the UD Invitational three years ago. Freshman Michael Oberschmidt capitalized on his first round 76 with a 79 in round two. Oberschmidt tied for 32nd overall. Senior Matthew Friend bounced back in a big way atoning for his first round 85 with a sizzling even-par 72 in round two. Friend completed the invitational tied for 38th overall. Sophomore Chris Woeste also enjoyed a better second round firing a 76 and finishing with a 161 total. But the day belonged to Glassman and Chappell, who have helped the Flyers achieve new heights in 2008. The two golfers over the summer qualified for the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship. At the U.S. Amateur, Chappell made it to the round of 64, while Glassman did not advance but shot rounds of 78 and 70 in his debut. The Chappell-Glassman duo were also believed to be the first UD golfers to qualify for the U.S. Amateur since Jack Zimmerman Sr., who played for three Cups during his post-Flyer days, the last at Pinehurst in 1962. Before that UD enjoyed its best finish in the 2008 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship, had two first-team All-Atlantic 10 selections in Chappell and Woeste and the A-10 individual medalist in Chappell for the for the first time in the program's history. Dayton looks to continue its success at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate in UD's fall season finale. The tournament will take place on Oct. 20 and 21 from Hopkinsville, Ky. |
