BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's golf team opened its season with a 10th-place finish at the John Piper Intercollegiate Tournament hosted by Bowling Green State University last weekend. The Flyers rallied from an opening-round 301 to shoot scores of 295 and 296 over the final two rounds. Senior Brett Gould matched his career-best with a 69 in the final-round and was UD's top finisher at 18th overall.

Gould, a fifth-year senior from nearby Carroll High School, opened with a 77 on Friday, but shot 73 and 69 over the final two rounds for a 219 total (+3) to lead the Flyers in their 2005 opener. His final-round three-under-par 69 was the round's third-best score overall.

Freshman Rob Chappell shot similar first and second rounds scores as Gould in his collegiate debut, but was edged by a stoke in Saturday's final round by Gould. Chappell finished 20th overall with a three-round score of 220 (+4).

Senior Adam Myers, who was the Flyers' leader after heading to the final round, finished with a 223 (+7) and was 27th overall. Myers carded scores of 74-72-77 on the 7,064-yard Stone Ridge Golf Club course.

Sophomore Matt Doherty and Jeff Heisler shot 233 and 235, respectively, to round out the Flyers in the field.

The host Falcons ran away with the tournament, shooting a 19-under score of 845 as a team. Marquette (854) and Ohio (858) rounded out the top three in the 13-team field.

Dayton returns to action September 26 and 27 at the John Dallio Memorial Invitational, hosted by DePaul University at the Prairie Landing Golf Club in Chicago.
