KETTERING, Ohio - There's some days in golf where a golfer just has a good feeling about the way they'll play.

For senior Sam Morton and sophomore Rob Chappell, they knew it before stepping on the NCR South Course.

Behind sizzling third round scores of 72, Morton and Chappell led the Dayton Flyers to a third place finish at the 2007 UD Spring Invitational. It's the best finish for the Flyers in the spring season.

"I'm so pleased with how they fought today," head coach Drew Tyrer said. "Our mindset completely changed. We didn't focus on the score; we focused on the shot at hand."

Although Morton battled the flu during the tournament, he opened up the scoring firing a 33 on the front nine and finished the tournament tied for eighth.

Chappell bounced back from scores of 87 and 80 on Monday to finish tied for 22nd overall at 239. This is the third time in 2007 Chappell has fired a round of 72.

"Shooting a 72 going into conference has not only given Rob confidence, but made him excited about his game," said Tyrer.

Morton's 72 is his best score of the spring season and his lowest since tallying a 73 at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational in October 2006.

"Sam might be the grittiest player I've ever seen," Tyrer said. "He came today sick, got off to a four over par start and bounced back with four birdies on his last five holes. He did his best to put together a great round for the team."

Warmer weather and less wind helped lower scores across the board. One of those players who took advantage of the improved conditions was sophomore Mark Juve who finished just behind Morton and Chappell. Juve recorded a third round score of 79 in the final round to finish with a 242 and finished tied for 32nd.

Coming off a stellar performance on Monday, freshman Kenny Wittenberg put together another strong effort with an 80 in the final round. He finished 12th overall with a total score of 236 and finished second on the team.

With a final round 87, sophomore Mitch Custenborder finished with a total score of 243, tied for 34th overall. Sophomore Nick Trubee continued to battle adding a third round score of 80. Trubee finished the invitational tied for 43rd with a 245.

"I think we've made improvements where we need to and take the program to the next level," Tyrer said.

Other Flyers in the invitational included freshman JD Seymour with an 84 in round three to finish with a 248 overall and a tie for 48th. Freshman Nick Miller continued his consistent play with a final round 85 and fished tied for 56th with a total of 251.

Senior John Zaller tallied a final round 90 to finish with a total score of 251 and a 56th place finish. Freshman John Hennessey sliced his score in all three rounds finishing the tournament with an 86 in round three and a final score of 265.

Wisconsin Green-Bay won the tournament with a total score of 925. Bowling Green State came in second at 936 and had the No. 1 golfer in the invitational with John Powers shooting rounds of 76, 79 and a third round best 71.

Rounding out the tournament scoring was Youngstown State in fourth, Wright State and Cleveland State tying for fifth, Malone in seventh, Saint Joseph's in eighth, Waterloo taking ninth, Butler in 10th, Canisius 11th and IPFW finishing 12th.

Dayton concludes the 2007 Spring Season in Winter Garden, Florida for the Atlantic 10 Championship from May 4-6.

"This is a definite confidence boost for us and our guys," Tyrer said. "I think without a doubt it will get us steamrolling into conference."
