RICHMOND, Ky. - Finally, the Dayton Flyers are starting to see their hard work pay off.

After firing a 296 in round one and a 290 in the second round, the Flyers placed in a tie for seventh at the Eastern Kentucky University Invitational. Senior John Zaller and sophomore Mitch Custenborder fired career best scores of 71 to lead the way.

"This is a great learning experience for what you have to do to shoot some great scores," said head coach Drew Tyrer. "We're getting there, we really are."

Sophomore Rob Chappell tallied rounds of 74 and 72 to finish the day tied for 27th with a two-over, 146. Chappell has fired five consecutive rounds below 80.

Right behind Chappell was senior Sam Morton who put together back-to-back scores of 74 to finish with a 148, four strokes over par.

Sophomore Nick Trubee improved as the invitational continued shooting a 77 in the first round and rallying for a 73 in the second.

Zaller started off on fire tallying a season best 71 in round one. He slipped in round two firing an 81 and finished the day with a 152, eight strokes over par.

Custenborder played exactly the opposite of Zaller shooting an 81 in round one and tallying his best score of the year with a 71 in the second round.

Tyrer credited the improved scores by having his team take a better mental approach and keeping the game fun.

"We had a simple strategy today," Tyrer said. "Stay in the present and make the simple shot at hand. It's so hard to let your mind go astray when you are playing 36 holes for over a 10-hour span. I felt we really focused on that. We made good decisions to be patient."

Dayton finishes up play in the third and final round of the EKU Invitational starting at 8:30 a.m. ET.
