EIGHT FOOTBALL FLYERS NAMED CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT

Nov. 12, 2004

Senior safety Doug Jones (Zanesville, OH) heads the list of eight University of Dayton football players who have been named to the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-District IV Team, announced today. The eight Dayton players on the team were the most of any other school in the district for the fourth straight year, and included five first-team selections.

The CoSIDA Academic All-District team is the first step in selecting this year's CoSIDA Academic All-America team. Everyone named to the district first teams appears on the national CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot.

Joining Jones, who was a CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American last season, on the district first team and the national ballot are senior defensive tackle Chris Dearth (Bellbrook, OH), senior linebacker Kyle Magoteaux (Piqua, OH), senior defensive tackle Jared McQuiston (Walton, IN) and senior tailback Steve Verhoff (Wellington, OH).

Dearth was also on last year's district first team, and Magoteaux was on the second team in 2003.

Dayton players on this year's second team were junior linebacker John Hoppe (Northbrook, IL), junior center Ryan McNulty (Cleveland, OH) and senior kicker Jason Resch (Poland, OH).

The district team is made up of student-athletes from Division I-A and I-AA schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.

Since 1980, UD has had 32 First Team Academic All-America selections, including at least one in each of the last 12 years. Overall, UD has had 41 football Academic All-Americans. Among schools currently playing Division I football, only Nebraska (78) and Notre Dame (44) have had more.

The Flyers were 7-3 in 2004, and are ranked #5 in the Football Gazette NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major rankings, and sixth by the Sports Network.
