JONES NAMED PFL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Oct. 18, 2004

University of Dayton senior safety Doug Jones has been named the Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Week for his play in Saturday's 29-12 win at Robert Morris. UD is now 6-1 on the season, and has clinched its 28th straight winning season.

Not only was Jones Dayton's leading tackler in the win (seven hits, tying him with cornerback Casey Klaus), but he also accounted for eight of the Flyers' 12 second-half points. Jones blocked a punt that resulted in a safety in the third quarter, and finished off the scoring (and the Colonials) with a 30-yard interception return in the fourth.

A 2001 graduate of West Muskingum High School, Jones also batted down two passes, had a sack and a QB pressure. He leads UD this season with 51 tackles. In fact, his 32 solo hits are more than all but three of his teammates have in total tackles this year.

He led UD with 104 tackles in 2003, and was named a Sports Network First Team NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major All-American.

This is the second time in three weeks Jones has been honored by the PFL. He was chosen the league's Special Teams Player of the Week on October 4.

The Flyers return home and return to PFL North Division action on Saturday when they play host to Butler. Game time is 1:00 p.m. EDT.
