10 FLYERS NAMED TO PFL ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
April 18, 2005 ST. LOUIS, MO - Ten Dayton student-athletes earned spots on the 2004 Academic All-Pioneer Football League squads, the most in the league. Drake and San Diego both had eight players. Among the Flyers chosen were seniors Doug Jones and Steve Verhoff. Jones has also been selected for the Football Gazette NCAA I-AA Mid-Major All-American Team. He was also chosen to be University of Dayton's Most Valuable Player and the Pioneer Football League North Division Defensive Player of the Year in 2004. Verhoff, along with junior Brandon Staley was chosen to be part of the First Team-Offense. Senior Chris Dearth was selected for First Team-Defense with his teammate Jones. Senior Jason Resch and Juniors John Schmall and Ryan Winner were chosen for First Team-Special Teams. John Hoppe, junior and Kyle Magoteaux, senior, both made Second Team-Defense. The All-PFL was established to recognize student-athletes who excel on the field and in the classroom. The student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve and have a 3.00 cumulative grade point average. Dayton returns nine starters next fall with for the 2005 season. |
