DAYTON, Ohio - Senior Ben Shappie tied a UD and Pioneer Football League record with five rushing touchdowns as the Dayton Flyers picked up a 42-0 win over the Campbell Camels. Shappie also rushed for a career-high 126 yards on 17 carries as the Flyers improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Pioneer Football League. Dayton also extended its home unbeaten streak to 11 games. Senior Rob Florian went 16-for-28 for 244 yards and touchdown with and three interceptions. Redshirt freshman Justin Millio had four catches for 48 yards and a touchdown to lead the receivers. Freshman Ben Welsh recorded an interception as the Flyer defense held the Camel attack to a miniscule 85 yards of total offense. Dayton compiled 29 first downs and 559 total yards of offense. UD had 315 yards on the ground as senior Joe Gulick rushed for 81 yards on 13 carries and Florian added 33 yards. UD got on the board first thanks to a three-yard run by Shappie giving the Flyers a 7-0 advantage. Justin Watkins set up the run with a 32-yard reception to bring the ball deep into Camel territory. Millio then caught an 18-yard touchdown pass midway through the second quarter giving UD a 14-0 cushion. Shappie then plunged in from one yard out for his second touchdown of the afternoon capping a six-play, 55-yard drive. Other than two first half turnovers, the Dayton offense looked strong compiling 331 total yards. Conversely, the UD defense shut down the Camel attack in the first 30 minutes of play allowing 63 total yards, three first downs and limiting Campbell to a 1-of-8 conversion rate on third downs. In the second half, Shappie once again converted on a short-yardage situation scoring from two yards to put Dayton ahead 28-0 early in the third quarter. On the next drive, Shappie scampered 21-yards for his fourth TD of the game giving the Flyers a 35-0 lead. Shappie matched the program record for touchdown runs thanks to a three-yard scamper extending the UD advantage to 42-0. Shappie holds the record with Richard Punch, Gary Kossins, Kevin Hofacre, Pat Hofacre and Judd Mintz. Mintz was the last Flyer to rush for five touchdowns in one game back in 1993. Junior Scott Horcher and sophomore Ross Fumagalli each had six tackles while redshirt sophomore Brandon Wingeier, senior Scott Vossler and senior Kalen Hemmelgarn each recorded a sack to lead the Flyer defense. For Campbell, freshman defensive back Brandon Chandler had two interceptions as the Camels dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The Flyers next game will take place at home on Saturday, Oct. 11 at Welcome Stadium against the Drake Bulldogs. |
