A 2004 captain, Staley took over the starting quarterback duties having never thrown a varsity pass and came through with the fourth-best single-season number for total offense in UD history-1,961 yards. He completed 100 of 169 passes (.592) for 1,617 yards and ran for 344 yards. His 344 yards rushing was the third-best on the team. Staley ran for eight touchdowns, passed for eight more, and threw eight interceptions on the season. He began his season by passing seven-for-eight for 121 yards against St. Joseph's in his first career start. In that St. Joseph's game, he showed some of his mental toughness. His first snap as a starting QB was a handoff that resulted in a ten-yard touchdown run. But on the second varsity snap of his career, he began the drive with both of his feet in his own end zone. Ninety-nine yards later, he drove the Flyers to their second touchdown of the game. In the Davidson win, he accounted for all 80 yards (four pass completions for 62 yards, and three runs for 18) in a game-winning drive that started with 2:28 left in the game, and ended two minutes and two seconds later with Staley carrying it in from the 12-yard-line. He is a three-time member of the PFL Academic Honor Roll.
