    AT DAYTON:
Smyth was projected to start at safety earning two letters as a backup corner and special teams player heading into 2008. He started the first two games of the year there before injuries necessitated his return to corner for the rest of the season. Despite the shuffling, he had a fantastic season, leading all of FCS football in passes defended, breaking up 19 passes and intercepting two more for an average of 1.75 passes defended per game. He added 48 tackles, 33 of which were solo, two forced fumbles and a touchdown interception return on the season. Smyth finished second on the team in interceptions and sixth in solo tackles. During the 2007 season, Smyth saw action in all 12 games for the Flyers with seven solo tackles and two assisted tackles. In 2006, he had 20 tackles (11 solo), three passes broken up and an interception in 10 games. Smyth did not play in any games as a freshman in 2005. He is a four-time member of the PFL Academic Honor Roll. In addition, he received ESPN the Magazine Second Team Academic All-District and Second Team Academic All-PFL recognition in 2008.
