AT DAYTON: Senior running back Ben Shappie is back after being listed as starter every game in 2007, and finishing second on the team in rushing. Shappie's numbers of 529 yards and six touchdowns in 108 carries (4.9 yards per carry) were also ninth in the PFL in yards per game (44.1). He had more than half of his yardage (280 of 529) in the last four games of the season. He had 88 of his season-high 95 yards in the second half of the San Diego win, after the Flyers had built a 21-7 halftime lead. And he had 50 of his team-high 62 yards in the fourth quarter of the Gridiron Classic win over Albany. He also had 53 receiving yards adding up to 10 total touchdowns on the season. Shappie earned a mention on the Second Team Academic All-District team for the 2007 season as well. He gained 169 yards on 170 carries (4.3 per carry) and scored six TD's in 2006. He was third on the team in rushing and tied for team honor in TD's. Shappie was also fourth on the team in receiving (7 catches for 71 yards). As a redshirt freshman, Shappie appeared in eight of ten games in the 2005 season and earned his first letter in the process. He ran the ball 12 times for 95 yards (7.8 avg.) and made one touchdown. He also had a 13-yard pass reception. He was on the PFL Academic Honor Roll the last two seasons.

PERSONAL: Son of Scott and Janice Shappie...Born on November 7, 1985...Majoring in Mechanical Engineering... Shappie was team captain of Versailles 2003 state championship team. A two-time team MVP, He was county Player of the Year and First Team All-Ohio as a senior. He was a three-sport athlete (football, basketball, baseball) and was captain of the basketball team. He was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated 12th in his class.
