AT DAYTON: A 2008 team captain, McDonald entered the starting lineup full-time for the first time in 2007 and had to have a superb season with the Flyers. A First Team All-Pioneer Football League selection, he made plays in eight defensive categories (getting everything but a QB hurry). McDonald plays the hybrid linebacker/safety position known as "Flyer" or "nickel" in the Dayton defensive package, and at 5-10, 184 lbs., he is not the most imposing physical specimen. But his game is large. In 2007, he led the team in solo hits (40), tied for team and league honors in fumbles recovered (3, including one for a TD), was second in total tackles (79), was tied for third in interceptions (2), and was fifth in tackles for loss (8.5) and passes batted down (4). He also had a fumble forced and a sack. In 2006, he backed up John Hoppe at Flyer, playing in all ten games and getting 18 hits (11 solo),an interception and a forced fumble. In 2005, McDonald earned his first letter playing in seven games (before suffering a knee injury) where he had 31 hits (17 solo) and one interception. Even though his season was stopped short by the injury, he was named UD's Most Improved Player. He is a two-time member of the Pioneer Football League Academic Honor Roll. PERSONAL: Son of Randy and Roberta McDonald...Born on July 14, 1985...Majoring in Adolescence-to-Young-Adult Education... McDonald is the latest in a long line of Newark Catholic products to don the Red and Blue. He was First Team All-Ohio in football, and placed fifth in the state in wrestling. He also ran track. He was a member of the National Honor Society, and was senior class vice-president. |
