    At Dayton:
In 2008 Hemmelgarn started all 12 games for the Flyers while battling through a shoulder injury. He totaled 44 tackles, 11.5 of which were for loss and 5 sacks. As a result, Hemmelgarn was named to the 2008 All-Pioneer Football League 1st Team. Off the field Hemmelgarn was named to the ESPN the Magazine's Academic All-District 2nd Team. He also earned UD's "Beno" Keiter Award for four-year contributions to the football program. In 2007 Hemmelgarn came out of nowhere last year to be named First Team Sports Network FCS Mid-Major All-America. He was also named an Honorable Mention All-American on the Sports Network's All-America team that encompassed all of FCS football. Along with being named an All-Pioneer Football League 1st Team selection. Hemmelgarn was nationally ranked in fumbles recovered (3) and sacks (8.5), and totaled 41 tackles, 10.5 of which were for a loss. He also forced two fumbles and batted down four passes. All impressive enough, but even more so when you realize he was not listed as a starter for any game last year. He saw action in eight games and had two unassisted tackles while earning his first letter in 2006. He did not play as a freshman. He was a member of the 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 PFL Academic Honor Rolls.
